Who made it? What is their background?

Peter Candeland and Jamie Hewlett directed the Gorillaz video. Peter Candeland wanted to draw and create images from a very young age. He started of working for Disney in 1991 where he learnt his way through the job doing animations like Darkwing the duck. He then went onto London which helped him improve in animation and film making. After that he has been doing many jobs which have mainly been animations. Jamie Hewlett was bought up in Horsham west Sussex. He went to North Brook Collage in which he made a fanzine which after leaving collage caught the interest of Brett Ewins in which he made magazines which, started his career.

How was it made?

It was made on a strip of a road in a desert. It was filmed by having cameras on one car and driving at the same speed as the car getting filmed to give the effect of seeing a car moving fast. They also added the animation on after the filming.

How did it use conventions, such as leading line, framing and composition?

They used leading line in the video which was the road that the cars were driving on in the desert. They also used framing by videoing through the car’s windows.

What aspects can you take from this, to help develop your own creative visual approach?

The aspects that I can take from this is the really good animations used and the really good camera work. This could develop my own creative visual approach by how they use leading lines throughout the video.

Framing

Leading Line

Symmetry

Framing

Who made it? What is their background?

Dougal Wilson directed the 2019 Christmas advert. He went to Durham University to study astrophysics after that he went to work as a copywriter in Edinburgh at Leith advertising agency. He then moved to London to pursue a career in directing.

How was it made?

It started to take place in January when they started reviewing scripts. Then they shot the actual advert in August in a fairy tale like set. Then they started the initial process of making the animated character. They first made the initial animation and then rendering it to give the character texture and make it look more realistic.

How did it use conventions, such as leading line, framing and composition?

It used conventions such as symmetry for example two people standing beside a snowman. There is also framing when the main character is looking out of a window.

What aspects can you take from this, to help develop your own creative visual approach

I like how they use a lot of symmetry in the video which I would like to do and they using framing to show a character looking out a window.

Rule of thirds

Symmetry

Who made it? What is their background?

James Camron is making Avatar 2. He went to university before dropping out to then driving trucks to support his screenwriting ambition. His got his first big job when he got hired to be an art director after that he got more into directing and made big films like the Terminator.

How was it made?

It was made using CGI which means computer generated image. They used actual people doing certain movements to help make the characters which were CGI to look more realistic and natural moving. They also filmed with actual actors as humans are part of the story line in the film.

How did it use conventions, such as leading line, framing and composition?

It uses conventions like symmetry this is when there is a shot where you see a face of an avatar eyes open. It also kind of show rule of thirds where there showing the pods in which the humans sleep in.

What aspects can you take from this, to help develop your own creative visual approach

It has amazing CGI which is very detailed and realistic. I also like how there is bright colours throughout the trailer and that the scenery is bright and colourful this helps develop my creative visual approach by the use of bright colours in the background.

Who are your key Influences in Film, Media and Art?

My key influences in film media and art are the advert of the dogs trust where they use a human teddy to represent a person.

How does your Stone Pillow project show the influence of range of artists/filmmakers?

I got slight inspired by the animation from the dog trust advert and the airport advert.

Look at the Spotlights films: Trainspotting, Donnie Darko, Hot Fuzz, Sin City, Wes Anderson: how have you been influenced by them?

I have been influenced by sin city by they way they use film noir and its quite a depressing movie.

Consider how you have used conventions from specified films in your own work: describe the convention; explain how/why you have used it.

I have used symmetry and I have used different shots for example a low down shot to show the experience of the person.

Composition: leading line, framing, symmetry.

I have used symmetry in many of the shots.

Editing: jump cuts, Edgar Wright, transitions, dissolves.

I haven’t done any of that yet.

Sound: sound bridges, voiceovers, foley.

I have recorded some sounds but haven't edited them yet.

Structure: flashback, story.

The story is a bear getting abandon.

Aesthetic style: use of colour, lighting, different shot types (extreme close ups, long shot, dolly, low angle).

I am using black and white filter to show the emotion of the teddy bear.

Research into Stone Pillow

The stone pillow charity was founded in 1989 and is a charity that helps homeless people in Chichester, Bognor Regis and Littlehampton. They working with over 130 people daily. They help them get into independent accommodation and help support them through each of the stages. They accommodate 97 people and have supported 336 people over the year. They have services available like day centres, hostels, a recovery service, and supported housing. The charity has 2 hostels one in Chichester and one in Bognor that help provide short term accommodation. They also have two charity shops which help train and give opportunity's.

Contextual Research on Diversity in Film making

Picture1.png

How do existing charity promo films target the audience? What is appealing about their approach? How do they choose to represent homelessness? Give an example, using an image.

Existing charity videos target the audience by showing people ways that the charity can benefit from the donations and why the charity is important. Charity videos represent homelessness in a realistic way rather than the stereotypes.

How have you made your Stone Pillow film to target the specified audience? (either young kids or older teens)? Give examples of imagery, style, suitability of content.

I have used a teddy to appeal to a younger audience. I have shown a relatable situation where a teddy bear gets lost/dropped to show how a person would feel if they were homeless.

How does your intended audience use media? Where would be the best platform/place to put your Stone Pillow film? Why? How do you know this? Give a research source, not just your opinion.

They don’t really have a media platform as they are very young. Although they do probably watch t.v. on kids channels which don’t normally include many charity's.

Explain how you have used stylisation, effects, choice of imagery, suitable content, influences from music videos etc to help you shape the work suitably for the audience. You could relate your chosen way of working to artists such as Cole Bennett.

I made sure that the video was suitable of young children by making sure that there wasn’t anything inappropriate and no rude language. I also made the writing quite simple so they could read it and understand it. I have been influenced by Cole Bennent by adding sketches and drawing on top of the video.

Research into compositing

What is compositing? How can it be used?

Compositing is where you edit multiple 2d layers onto an image. It can be used to create a completely different picture. Its normally used to change an adapt a landscape that cannot be created in real life.

A compositor is a person who create a final image by

adding 2d images to create a realistic image/scene.
