Foley

What is Foley?

Foley is where you make sound effects for film, TV, video games and more.

Why do films use Foley sound effects?

They use Foley because they focus of the characters voice other sounds like the character walking doesn’t come up as loud or clear so Foley helps the noises sound crisper.  It is a lot added where there isn’t any sound in the filming like fight scenes. Foley can help give a certain atmosphere and mood.

How does Caoimhe Doyle approach making sound effects for challenging actions, such as an arrow hitting a target?

She layers up the sounds for example sounds of the horse hooves, metal and leather together makes the sound of the horse moving. She also had to change from using coconuts to actual horses hooves as for the Game Of Throne as it didn’t sound right and wasn’t deep enough.

Describe some of Caoimhe Doyle’s techniques for Foley.

Some of the techniques that Caoimhe Doyle’s is for screeching tyres  she blew up a hot water bottle with air folded it and pushed it and pulled it against a hard surface. She also got pasta in her mouth and bit down on it making a sound of an internal break or a noes break.

How important is sound to animation?

Sound in animation helps make the animation a lot more interesting and helps the audience understand what is going on and help helps create atmosphere and emotion.

How important is sound to games? Why is sound important?

Sound is very important in games as it helps create an atmosphere in the game. It also makes it a lot more interesting as it can help convey  actions, emotion and the scenery around.

Analyse one game or animation in terms of sound. Describe the types of sounds (realistic, toony, plain weird?)

In the animation they use quite realistic sounds which are to convey the characters surroundings and the characters actions although the sound is slightly changed as it’s a cartoonish type of animation and is not completely realistic looking.

What can you learn from the use of sound in your chosen game/animation? (Timing, suspense, atmosphere, surprise, shock?!)

The timing is perfect on what actions he makes for example cutting a branch. The sound stops for a few seconds when another character takes the fruit. The music is quit high pitched and is quite fast which is the opposite to the character which is quite slow. There is also an added high pitched note to convey the night time when it becomes the night time.

How can the use of sound in animation and games change the way the audience identifies with the character? How can sound effects make the animation more entertaining, educational, social?

The use of sounds in animation changes the way the audience identifies with the character by having maybe a high pitched happy song to convey that the characters good or a low pitched music to convey a bad character. It can make it a lot more entertaining by maybe adding fast music to add suspense. You could add songs that people may identify with other people who use the game or watch the animation. It can be educational but making a sound if you are right of wrong.

Now explain how this research will help you will make your own soundtrack more appealing to the viewers.

This research will help me understand why adding sound effects is important to animations. I also need to make the sounds slightly softer and not completely realistic as it’s a cartoon like animation.

1) Its very comical and makes it funny

2) Its effective because it sounds like footsteps however its on the wrong surface and doesn't sound completely accurate

3) It sounds a bit too much like seagulls which doesn't work with the animation being in the jungle

4) You need to crop out the sound at the beginning of the tap being turned on but it does sound like running water
